Panthers 2, Thrashers 1 (AP)


Too little, too late was the story of the Florida Panthers' season. Mike Van Ryn's overtime goal, his second score of the game, lifted the Panthers past the Atlanta Thrashers 2-1 on Tuesday night. Van Ryn took a pass from Joe Nieuwendyk in the left circle and his slap shot went over the shoulder of Adam Berkhoel at 1:34 of overtime.

Atlanta gets another shot at the NHL All-Star game (AP)


The NHL All-Star game is coming to Atlanta -- again. The city was supposed to host the 2005 game, but the season was canceled because of the lockout. So, Philips Arena was awarded the league's midseason showcase in '08. "This a bit of deja vu all over again," said NHL senior vice president Ken Yaffe, who made the announcement Saturday at a news conference before the Thrashers' final regular-season...

Bondra's overtime strike lifts Atlanta



Peter Bondra scored 1:03 into overtime to give the Atlanta Thrashers a 6-5 win over New Jersey on Thursday night and a four-game season sweep of the Devils.

Bondra knocked in a rebound shot from Andy Sutton, whose shot bounced off New Jersey goaltender Martin Brodeur's chest and onto Bondra's stick. It was his 18th goal.

"I just went to the net. Suttsy's great shot hit Brodeur somewhere in the shoulder.




DiPietro earns career-best 27th win



Mike York scored twice, and Miroslav Satan added a goal and two assists as the New York Islanders beat the Atlanta Thrashers 5-1 Saturday night.

Rick DiPietro earned his career-best 27th win by making 22 saves. Sean Bergenheim, Alexei Yashin and Bruno Gervais added goals for New York.

Ilya Kovalchuk scored his 45th of the season for Atlanta, which had a three-game winning streak snapped.

The New York Islanders are playing as though they can still make the NHL playoffs.

Miroslav Satan had a goal and two assists, and the New York Islanders beat the Atlanta Thrashers 5-1 Saturday night.

"Every game from here on out is a Game 7," Satan said. "This was a chance to stay alive, and we'd rather be five points out than nine points out. At nine points, it's just about over."

Rick DiPietro earned his career-best 27th win by making 22 saves.




Thrashers-Lightning Preview



GAME: Atlanta Thrashers (35-30-6) at Tampa Bay Lightning (38-29-5).

TIME: Thursday, 7:30 p.m. EST.

Tied with two teams in the race for the sixth through eighth seeds in the Eastern Conference, the Tampa Bay Lightning look to hold off another playoff hopeful when they host the Atlanta Thrashers.

Tampa Bay lost 2-1 to Carolina on Monday night, then watched as Montreal and New Jersey won Tuesday to pull into a tie for sixth with the Lightning with 81 points.
